Benzyl alcohol is used as a preservative for ointment, a desiccant for fiber, nylon silk and plastic film, a stabilizer for polyvinyl chloride, a photographic developer, a solvent for acetate fiber, ink, paint, paint, epoxy resin coating, dyes, casein, shellac and gelatin, and an intermediate in the production of benzyl ester or ether. It is also used to make spices and flavorings (mostly benzyl alcohol esters of fatty acids) as additives in soaps, perfumes, cosmetics and other products. The hydroxyl group of benzyl alcohol used as a deodorant and diluent in the fragrance industry is very active. It can react with benzene to form diphenylmethane, with acrylonitrile to form N-benzyl acrylamide (Ritter reaction), and with phosphorus halide and hydrohalic acid to form benzyl halide. Halochemicalbooklized benzyl and benzyl alcohol are both benzyl (phenylmethyl) compounds used to provide benzyl protection to carboxylic acids and alcohol hydroxyl groups. The benzyl protective group is easily removed by hydrogenation. In addition, benzyl alcohol is easily oxidized to benzoic acid by a variety of oxidants, and if oxidized with nitric acid, aldehydes or acids can be formed depending on the concentration and temperature. When penicillin is injected, in order to prevent patients from feeling too strong pain, benzyl alcohol is often used for anesthesia, so that the pain will not be too strong, so benzyl alcohol is also known as "painless water". However, a common side effect was soon found clinically: gluteal muscle contracture. This is because benzyl alcohol is not easy to be absorbed by the body, long-term accumulation in the injection site, will lead to necrosis of the surrounding muscles, even affect the development of bone. In 2005, the State Food and Drug Administration banned benzyl alcohol as a solvent for penicillin injection.
